I think there is no better example of how Mexico treats culture and media made by local artists compared with how it treats foreign stuff than the fact that Guillermo del Toro wanted Pinocchio to come out in cinemas here, and the movie theaters cancelled the screening last second so he had to ask independent movie theaters and local governments to show the film.

Not even because he's a world famous director does a Mexican creator gets any respect in Mexico

(it was not even because of lack of interest because the university's theater where I watched it was packed when I went, so that adds insult to injury)

also ngl, I’m almost certain that cinemex refused to screen it because of the political message that pinocchio has

usually, mexican movies that talk about heavy topics or diverge from the usual romcoms and cheap comedy don’t do well in cinemas. and not because people aren’t interested in them (which is a factor in some cases too, ofc); but rather because the amount of promotion that those valuable productions have in cinemas and other media like tv or radio is dismal to the more “commercial” ones, which always get all the attention.

even worse — if they happen to make it to the billboard and people want to watch them, those beautiful productions get the worst projection times in comparison to the other movies without any apparent explanation.

I also think that cinemex believed that they would get away with it because “it’s a kids movie, it’s animation, no one will care” and BOY AM I GLAD THEY GOT CALLED OUT BY THE AUDIENCE AND BY THE DIRECTOR HIMSELF

in any case, I’m glad it’ll still be projecting this week in most cinemas, and I hope the audience will also stand up for other local directors and actors when it comes to injustice to their art just like they did with memo, because all of them deserve respect and the right for their art to be enjoyed

sorry for more human au posting. non-exhaustive list of weird things human yellow has done in his life:

• almost got sucked into a cult
• actually got sucked into a different cult. only for a month until he hit the bricks though
• eaten human flesh (only a little and by accident! says yellow. was it related to one of the cults, asks red. no, says yellow, it was at a health awareness convention my dad took me to. after a pause he adds maybe in one of the cults too now that i think about it.)
• been a subject in experimental mkultra-esque mind control trials. he didn’t realize that was what it was until long after it was over he just thought he was signing up for normal scientific trial stuff
• had several near-death experiences, all from completely unrelated things at different points in his life. one of them was from getting hit by a car. one of them was from contracting a rare disease. there’s more but i’ll stop here.
• been a child actor (only for a few months until roy realized he was absolutely not suited for it. this was also one of the near death experiences bc there was an accident on set)
• was a delinquent one year as a teen until he maybe committed minor arson on the city hall while blackout drunk. he never found out if it was him but he kept his head down after that.
• forged documents on the dark web

when he tells them about that last one duck is like OH that’s not weird who HASN’T done that! and yellow is like I KNEW ONE OF MY LIFE EXPERIENCES HAD TO BE NORMAL and they are like high fiving and commiserating and red is wondering how he, who has spent his whole life as The Weirdo, has ended up the most normal person in the house.

to be clear none of them are normal though it is only by comparison.
